Louise Treadwell Tracy created and completed a project on behalf of children with deafness. She had a son with this special need. A doctor informed her that there was nothing medical intervention could do and that she should bring her son John when he completed 5 years. Louise felt this would be a loss of valuable time. With the aim of helping her son, she developed a method of teaching lip reading in harmony with a system of receptive language combined with expressive language – “We are talking about different sides of the same coin,” she comments. Louise accomplished this sensitive work with her subtle intelligence and loving maternal manner. She notes: “The child is not just reading lip movements, but reading meanings”.
When she approaches a child, one can feel through photos that her kind demeanor becomes a social and therapeutic wand without her even being aware of it. With her own pedagogical discoveries she began a Clinic for 13 mothers, including herself. She insisted that the services be offered free of charge. Louise's husband, the actor Spencer Tracy, supported the Clinic financially and was its sole support for many years. The actual “John Tracy Clinic,” in Los Angeles, California, subsequently helped more than 100,000 families. This clinic offers information about play audiometry, otoacoustic emissions testing and cochlear implants for children.

Louise Treadwell Tracy criou e completou um projeto em benefício às crianças que têm surdez. Ela teve um filho que se enquadrava neste caso especial. Um doutor em medicina
Informou-lhe que não existia nada que uma intervenção médica pudesse fazer e que ela devia trazer seu filho John de volta quando ele tivesse completado 5 anos de idade. Louise sentiu que isto seria um grande desperdício de tempo. Com o intuito de ajudar seu filho, ela desenvolveu um método de leitura de lábios, em harmonia com um sistema de linguagem receptiva combinado com linguagem expressiva ”Estamos falando de diferentes lados da mesma moeda,” ela comenta. Louise realizou este sensitivo trabalho com sua inteligência sutil e seu amoroso jeito materno. Ela observa: “A criança não está somente lendo o movimento labial, mas lendo significados”.
Quando ela se aproxima de uma criança, sente-se até pelas fotos que sua postura meiga se torna uma vara de condão social ou terapêutica, sem que ela mesma se dê conta disto. Com descobertas pedagógicas Louise começou uma clínica para 13 mães, que a incluía. Ela insistiu que os serviços fossem oferecidos grátis. O marido de Louise, o ator Spencer Tracy deu suporte financeiro à Clínica, e foi por muitos anos seu único suporte. A atual “John Tracy Clinic” em Los Angeles, Califórnia veio a socorrer mais de 100.000 famílias. Esta Clinica oferece informação sobre: audiometria lúdica, testes de emissões otoacústicas e implante coclear para crianças.
